Mind-blowing, beautiful, practical, and entirely accessible
This book is introducing me to a way of learning about and using the medicine of the earth in a completely non-linear, non-trial-and-error, non-rote sort of way. Overwhelmed by the prospect of learning "herbology," given the variety of plants as well as of diseases out there, i was amazed and encouraged to discover that there is a way of healing through nature that involves RELATIONSHIPS rather than KNOWLEDGE or what we call science. And it seems far more powerful, if personal accounts are to be believed--and why not?

Cowan does not write only of plants but also of modern physics, the Five Elements, and emotional and cultural issues. It's a marvelously edifying work in many different ways and i couldn't recommend it more strongly. - karli , posted 03/24/06

connecting with the natural world like a shaman
i am still reading through this book, but i have decided to work with a local practitioner of the medicine. i'm interested in plant communion and nature spirits, which is not an overly-covered subject, so this book has been the latest in an unfolding trail after its scent. a good read, too. - jadene , posted 08/06/05
