Its prominence was due to the flatness of the terrain
Back when dinosaurs roamed the streets of Portland Old Wives Tales was the place to go for vegetarian food. But those days are long long gone. Now vegetarian and vegan are mainstream, and there's lots of alternatives. OWT goes for small portions, bland safe vegetarian food, higher prices, slow service, and a 70s feminist sensibility.

It was as good as its rep. But it's an old rep. And it just didn't keep up with the times. - Todd , posted 06/25/08

eh.
i thought the playroom was nicely painted but boring, luckily my daughter had a friend to play with. the food was eh-our service was actually good though, after reading these reviews. if you have a lot of food sensitivities and want to eat out it would be the place to go, but since we don't we probably won't be going back. lots of restaurants in portland are kid friendly without saying so, i have found anyway. - saltyfish , posted 06/22/08

Best....hummmmm...........well?
A great place for kids to play while you choke down food that begs to be elevated to mediocre. - David , posted 06/16/07

I hate it
If you aren't a vegetarian don't even bother going there. - Rand , posted 05/03/07

False Advertising
I went in thinking it would be a sea faring themed seafood restaurant. I'm thinking clam chowder and fishing nets on the walls. I was sorely disappointed to find vegetarian faux Mexican food to be the primary menu items. It was a szchizophrenic menu to say the least.

Now I did like what I got, it was quite good in fact. But I doubt I'll return. - Jade , posted 07/16/06

Old Microwaves Tales...
I agree, it's all about the Hungarian Mushroom soup but everything from the hot kitchen is... microwaved! It was just an idea of mine until a friend who worked there confirmed it. BLEH! - BKLYN , posted 05/30/06

Good but inconsistent
I've had some amazing food there with wonderful servers. I've had bland food there with a server I couldn't get ahold of if I stood on the table and took my clothes off. It's not a place I would go if I didn't have children with me. But it's a great place for larger groups with several children -- no arguing with them to stay in their seats, stop annoying the other customers, etc. - Miss Cat , posted 03/30/06

overpriced at the very least
The salad/soup bar is pretty good, but not for the price. I expected much more much more. - Lauren , posted 12/27/05

Not been there in years.... here's why
Over-priced, bland uneventful food, obnoxious service when you are lucky to get any.

The kid-friendly environment is stale for the kids. - Jon , posted 08/15/05

Dissappointing as HELL
You know...I hate it when you get the total "build up" of expectations when you hear about a place over and over again. My question is, "What the hell is all the damned buzz about?"

My meal there was about as memorable as blowing my nose...it just seemed bland, reheated and uninspired. Combine that with the, ahem, "kid friendly," environment and you've got yerself one totally, blah dinner-date...

I have no reason to throw any of my money their way, ever again. - LunaDauhnn , posted 08/14/05

Long time Portland Vegetarian favorite
there are a few fish and chicken choices but most of the menu is vegetarian. This place has been around so long, it's not always consistent, but we keep going back for the Hungarian Mushroom soup among other things. Yummy homestyle hippie veggie food. Family friendly. - Heidi , posted 06/17/05
