Mixed up martial arts
Northwest Internal arts is the subdivision of Northwest Fighting Arts or NWFA.

I went there for a free class on two different occasions. Both times I was dismayed that nothing but some Qigong, the Taiji short form, and some Taiji sword was taught, despite their people telling me that Xingyi, Pakua, and Yiquan were taught as well.

In fact, no specific classes are offered in any particular style. It's all just the "qigong" class.

Also, no matter your interest or experience, it seems as though you will be forced to start with the Taiji short form. A very lame form imho. My first form was the traditional 102 Yang long form when I was 16. I now practice the 40 combined form regularly. Nobody there seemed to care. Further, I went there to study Xingyi, but it being wasn't taught, nor did it ever seem like it would.

They do teach some standing, zhaun zhang, similar to Yiquan, but don't seem to get into any push hands or power traning.

Also, the Qigong classes are too short and too much time is spent on qigong. But since the only internal art class is listed as "qigong" I guess that's to be expected.

Personally, I could not recommend NWFA/IA for the internal arts. Although they have a great gym and do seem pretty competent with the mixed martial arts, I did not try any of those classes.

It also seemed that they prefered the internal arts people to not cross into their external arts classes. Though nobody said anything, their tuition system is "program" based. You get to choose either the "internal" or the "external" program.

So, even though NWFA offers a lot of classes at different times, they do not give you the option to take whatever ones happen to fit your schedule for nice flat monthly rate like most other martial arts schools.

They also want a contract and try hard to get you to pay in advance or suffer an increased tuition.

Final word, their gym is nice, the people were nice, their MMA offerings are pretty good. But their prices are high, the program system is inflexible, and their offerings for internal arts are misleading.

I would suggest findoing a class/school specific to the internal art you're looking for and be skeptical about anyone who claims to offer so much. - Konoha Tim , posted 12/27/08

Excellent, intense martial arts studio
Northwest Internal Arts offers instruction in a variety of martial arts. The instruction is in depth and the demands placed on the students are adjusted to keep you working at the edge of your ability. They offer a broad range of class times too which is handy for people with busy schedules like mine. Check it out and see if you agree with what I've said. - russell , posted 06/28/06
