Eagle Creek Campground, Columbia Gorge
Just minutes East of Portland this is a pay campground, but is small and pretty nice. I normally don't like camping at a campground I can drive on asphalt on all the way up to the side of my tent, but this is an exceptional spot. Showers, toilets and fresh water on site. Excellent hiking!!! Fire pits. Beware mice and racoons at night, they WILL invade if you don't lock food down. The other thing that keeps this from five stars is that it is almost directly above the highway on a cliff. It's high enough that most noise is blown away by the winds, but some gets through.

I know lots of other good spots, but I only show folks, never tell them. ;-) - Unsubscribed , posted 04/24/06

Best camping close to Portland
I camp alot on Government Island. I've built small fire pits so you may want to look into that.

Camping
Timothy Lake! On the far side of it there are very large camp sites with big fire pits. It NOT a camp ground like the other side is, which means it's free! - Symsinia , posted 09/06/05
