Make a difference and gain professional experience! SE Works is looking for a creative and resourceful individual to serve as the Program Development Specialist for our English as a Second Language (ESL) Program. The preferred candidate will have experience working with ESL adults, strong organizational abilities, excellent interpersonal communication skills, and an interest in developing sustainable resources. This is a full-time AmeriCorps*VISTA position and the individual will serve from August 11, 2008 to August 17, 2009. Learn more about AmeriCorps*VISTA at www.americorps.org.

Position Summary:
The Program Development Specialist supports the English as a Second Language (ESL) program offered through SE Works’ Community Learning Center (CLC). The member will create a strong infrastructure for the program by developing sustainable systems, training materials, and instructional resources for ESL tutors and students.

Essential Responsibilities:
1) Develop and expand ESL curriculum and instructional resources for volunteers tutoring in the ESL program.
2) Create tutor training materials specific to best teaching practices and strategies for second language acquisition.
3) Adapt and construct financial management workshop materials for English language learners.
4) Expand resource database and teaching materials to be accessed by ESL tutors.
5) Connect with professionals in the community to increase knowledge and awareness of ESL-related issues and teaching strategies.
6) Collaborate with the Literacy Services Coordinator to identify additional resource development and infrastructural needs for the ESL program.
7) Attend monthly staff and volunteer coordinator meetings, as well as weekly supervision and CLC meetings.
8) Complete and submit in a timely manner all AmeriCorps* VISTA required reports and time sheets.
9) Attend AmeriCorps*VISTA sponsored orientations, trainings, meetings and disaster response.

Requirements:
1) Must be at least 18 years of age.
2) U.S. citizen, national or lawful permanent resident.
3) Possession of a high school diploma or equivalent, or commit to earning one prior to completion of service.
4) Ability to commit to the full term of service for which they are applying.
5) Submit to a criminal history background check and National Sex Offender Registry Search.
6) Regular and reliable attendance.

Preferred Qualifications:
1) An independent, self-motivated, creative and resourceful individual who enjoys working with diverse groups of people.
2) Experience working with ESL adults in an educational setting is preferred.
3) Interest in sustainable resource development.
4) Strong organizational and interpersonal communication skills.
5) A bachelor’s degree is preferred.

Benefits:
1) A $10,382 living allowance over a 12 month period.

4) Upon successful completion of a term of service, eligible members receive an education award of $4725 or a $1200 cash stipend. The education award can be used to repay qualified student loans, for further education in an accredited institution of higher learning, vocational or for trade schools. The education award is taxed in the year that it is used.
5) Loan forbearance (after successful completion of a term of service, a portion of the accrued interest on qualified loans will be re-paid).
6) Professional development and training opportunities.
